Abhyanga is Ayurveda’s classic massage experience. Start with customized warm herbal oils, according to personal constitution, luxuriously poured over the skin. Then the entire body from head to foot is massaged in rhythmic, circular strokes that drive the oil through the layers of the skin, dislodging toxins, stimulating circulation and immunity, balancing the nervous system, and promoting profound relaxation. An Abhyanga massage is deeply nourishing, and akin to being enveloped in a cocoon of warmth and serenity where tensions melt away into the presence moment of bliss. Abhyanga is also referred to as Snehan which is closely connected to Sneha, the Sanskrit word for love. Abhyanga in its truest seen is to be saturated with pure love.
Traditionally, Abhyanga is done by two therapist’s working in tandem with one another. It can also be experienced profoundly by one therapist working alone. Abhyanga is a core component of Pancha Karma, Ayurvedic cleansing and renewal, and is often recommended on a daily basis as a part of a cleansing program.
Additonally, the Abhyanga experience includes karma purna – oiling the ears, as well as a warm oil scalp massage.
